What is Category and Purpose field

Home >> Category & Purpose >> What is Category and Purpose field

You can use National Police Checks for employment purposes. It would help if you filled the purpose for the national police check correctly, stating the position or title of your job, name of the workplace and location.

If you do not provide clear information, ACIC can reject your check, and you must pay again. The purpose file helps determine the information disclosed on the police check certificate. The information released on a National Police Certificate is determined by legislation and based on the purpose of the check.

The information contained on the certificate is only current at the issue date. However, the certificate may be used more than once if it is for the same purpose. For example, a certificate stating the purpose as ‘Immigration’ is not appropriate for a job requiring a certificate for ‘Employment’. You should select the purpose of your check as ‘Immigration/Citizenship – for supply to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

AuthNTick cannot undertake a national police check without clearly stating the purpose.

Please remember a National Police Certificate is not suitable for court purposes as it only lists disclosable court outcomes and pending charges which may be subject to Spent Convictions legislation

The purpose template includes:

  • position title, occupation or entitlement being sought (for example, cleaner, caseworker, firearms licence)
  • the proposed place of work (for example, school, aged care facility, financial services office, domestic worksites)
  • whether or not you will have contact with children and/or vulnerable groups (see detail below).

We ask you to assist us in collecting information about whether an applicant seeks to work with children or vulnerable people, irrespective of the purpose of employment. This information assists us in our law enforcement functions and helps police make decisions about what police information can be disclosed on a police check.

Some examples of how to use the purpose field:

If the police who are vetting the nationally coordinated criminal history check application believe that they do not have enough information to release the most accurate police information, they may raise a Request for Further Information (RFI). The RFI may be requesting clarification on your category selection or request more detail about the role
